We’re seeking a part-time freelance writer to contribute original local news and feature stories for print and digital publication across a network of community publications.
Roles: This position involves writing original local news and feature stories, conducting interviews with residents and community leaders, covering local government meetings and community events, and identifying important stories your readers should know about. You may focus on one publication or contribute to multiple publications, depending on your location and availability.
What You’ll Do
- Write original local news and feature stories for print and digital publication
- Cover city councils, school boards, and other local government meetings
- Report on schools, businesses, organisations and community events
- Develop human-interest and community feature stories
- Interview residents, business owners, public officials and community leaders
- Take photos to accompany stories when needed
- Identify important local stories and issues your readers should know about
- Work with editors to strengthen coverage across publications
Skills/background needed: Newspaper reporting and writing experience is required. You should be comfortable conducting interviews, developing sources, covering meetings, writing on deadline, and producing accurate, engaging local journalism. We value writers who are dependable, self-motivated, and genuinely interested in the communities they cover.
Rate: Competitive entry-level pay, details shared upon application.
Contract length: Part-time, flexible.
