We’re hiring an entry-level multimedia journalist to create original video content for digital, streaming, and social platforms. This is a fully remote role perfect for someone who thinks like a reporter, shoots like a visual storyteller, and understands how audiences consume news on short-form video platforms.
You’ll produce platform-first video content across YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Facebook Reels, Instagram Reels, and other social channels. This role combines writing, shooting, editing, and publishing—all independently. You’ll create original vertical videos, identify compelling local stories, and develop content that performs well with digital-first audiences. Stories you produce may also be adapted for other platforms when appropriate.
What You’ll Do:
• Create original, exclusive short-form vertical video content for social and streaming platforms
• Pitch, research, write, shoot, edit, caption, and publish stories independently
• Identify local stories, community moments, explainers, and trending topics that resonate with digital audiences
• Develop accountability-focused digital stories that ask questions and seek answers on issues that matter to your community
• Produce follow-up stories that track whether promises were kept and problems were fixed
• Explain how local decisions affect viewers’ lives—schools, safety, housing, government, and more
• Repurpose newsroom content for social platforms while creating original content that starts online
• Use strong hooks, natural sound, captions, graphics, and mobile-first editing to make stories clear and engaging
• Shoot and edit video using professional cameras and editing software
• Appear on camera for explainers, updates, and storytelling when needed
• Monitor audience trends, platform performance, and engagement to guide content decisions
• Work collaboratively with other team members to develop multi-platform content
• Maintain editorial standards, accuracy, and journalistic ethics in all work
• Perform other newsroom duties as assigned
Skills/background needed:
• Strong writing, shooting, and editing skills
• Ability to work independently
• Understanding of short-form vertical video and platform-specific storytelling
• Experience creating content for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, or similar platforms (or willingness to learn)
• Ability to write clean, accurate, conversational copy
• Solid news judgment and understanding of local journalism
• Comfort asking questions, pursuing follow-ups, and handling accountability stories fairly
• Ability to read public documents and turn complex issues into understandable stories
• Comfort appearing on camera and conducting interviews
• Ability to shoot and edit quickly under deadline pressure
• Knowledge of social media trends, audience behavior, captions, and video pacing
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects
• Flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and breaking news as needed
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Preferred qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, digital media, or related field
• Previous experience as a multimedia journalist, digital journalist, video producer, content creator, or social media producer
• Experience with Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, CapCut, Canva, or similar editing tools
• Experience using analytics to evaluate performance and improve content
• Experience with public records requests or data-driven reporting
• Knowledge of SEO, social headlines, and mobile-first publishing
• Familiarity with content management systems and social publishing tools
About the role:
We’re looking for someone who is curious, creative, accurate, and fast. You should know how to take a local story and make it work for someone scrolling on a phone, while still meeting professional newsroom standards. Social video is an increasingly important way audiences discover news, and this role is designed to meet viewers where they are while maintaining credibility and journalistic integrity.
