About the Role
You’ll work in our Communications Center, receiving and responding to emergency and non-emergency calls. Using specialized computer systems, you’ll coordinate the dispatch of response units and maintain clear communication with field personnel. This is a part-time position in a 24/7 operation, so you’ll be willing to work various shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
What You’ll Do
• Receive and respond to emergency service requests from the public and partner agencies
• Use computer systems to track equipment, personnel, and vehicle locations
• Operate multiple radio frequencies and determine appropriate dispatch response
• Communicate using proper dispatch terminology with the public and field teams
• Maintain accurate records and logs of all communication activities
• Learn street and building locations using mapping systems
• Work closely with local agencies on multi-agency incidents
• Monitor and report technical issues with communication systems
• Provide emergency assistance instructions to callers
What We’re Looking For
No prior experience is required. We’ll train you in everything you need to know. The ideal candidate will have:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Keyboard proficiency at an acceptable speed (30 net words per minute is typical, though we’re flexible depending on the candidate pool)
• Ability to understand complex oral and written instructions
• Strong multi-tasking skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure
• Clear speaking voice and confident communication
• Attention to detail and strong memory for information
• Ability to read street maps and quickly locate addresses
• Good judgment and reliability
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Correct English usage, spelling, and grammar
Experience as a dispatcher (fire, police, ambulance, or military) is desirable but not required. If you speak Spanish or Asian languages, we’d love to hear from you.
What We Require
• Valid driver’s license or alternative transportation method
• Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification and Emergency Medical Dispatcher certification
• Current typing certification (issued within the past 24 months)
Working Conditions
This position is based in our communications center, an office environment. You’ll sit and stand for extended periods while working at a computer. The role involves occasional reaching, bending, and lifting (up to 25 pounds). You’ll have exposure to computer screens for prolonged periods. Part-time positions work up to 24 hours per week and cannot exceed 999 hours per fiscal year.
The Application Process
You’ll complete an online application and supplemental questionnaire. You’ll need to upload your current typing certification with your application. Selected candidates will proceed through a multi-stage selection process that includes a written examination covering emergency communications fundamentals and an oral interview with subject matter experts. All information you provide is subject to verification. Prior to a conditional offer, you’ll complete a background check, reference checks, fingerprinting, and a pre-placement medical examination including a drug screen.
