We’re looking for an enthusiastic and curious reporter to join our sports team and create stories and visual content that captures the high school sports scene in your local area.
You’ll cover breaking news, well-sourced stories, team updates, and athlete profiles using words and visuals that work across social media. No prior experience required – we’ll provide full training and support as you grow into the role.
What you’ll do:
• Create accurate, engaging stories that inform and entertain your audience across multiple platforms
• Become your community’s trusted voice on high school sports
• Connect with readers through social media, interviews, and community engagement
• Work with your editor to understand what’s working and develop strategies to meet audience needs
• Shoot, edit, and share photos and video content on mobile devices
• Provide excellent customer service by helping readers find answers
• Manage multiple deadlines and tasks simultaneously
• Work some evenings and weekends as needed
Skills/background needed:
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
• High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field preferred
• Proficiency with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit
• Ability to shoot and edit basic photos and video on a mobile device
• Strong writing, spelling, and grammar skills
• Ability to work well under deadline pressure
• Comfortable building relationships with athletes, coaches, and community members
• Willingness to learn and use new tools and platforms to enhance your work
• Collaborative approach to working with a team
• Previous reporting or sports coverage experience is a plus, but not required
