As a Communications Writer & Media Relations Coordinator, you will support media relations and communications activities, building relationships with journalists and industry contacts, and translating expertise into compelling stories and coverage opportunities.
You will work closely with communications and marketing teams to grow external visibility, working with subject matter experts to generate story ideas, prepare spokespeople for interviews, amplify coverage across channels, and manage annual awards submissions and recognition programs.
What you’ll do:
Media Relations & Story Development
Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and industry contacts covering your field of focus. Identify story opportunities by reviewing practice areas and expertise, then pitch compelling angles to media contacts. Draft press releases, media alerts, statements, and executive bios to support media opportunities. Create and maintain a targeted list of relevant media contacts and outlets. Work with subject matter experts and marketing teams to source thought-leadership opportunities like bylines, speaking placements, and award submissions.
Interview Coordination & Spokesperson Support
Coordinate media interview requests from start to finish — scheduling, logistics, and follow-up with journalists and internal leaders. Prepare briefing materials, talking points, and Q&A documents to help leaders prepare for interviews. Serve as the main point of contact for media inquiries, sorting and routing requests appropriately. Support media training coordination for spokespeople when needed.
Awards & Recognition Program Management
Manage annual awards and recognition submissions from start to finish, including setting timelines, gathering nominations, drafting entries, and tracking results. Build and maintain a calendar of award deadlines, working backward to set internal milestones. Communicate wins internally and externally to maximize impact.
Coverage Amplification & Reporting
Package earned coverage for internal newsletters and team updates to maximize reach. Work with social media teams to amplify coverage and thought leadership across LinkedIn and other platforms. Monitor media coverage using monitoring tools, track placements, and compile reports on media relations performance.
Content & Communications Support
Write, edit, and proofread media-related content including talking points, briefing documents, newsletters, and team updates. Support internal communications around media wins and accolades. Assist with drafting statements in partnership with communications and leadership teams as needed.
Project & Workflow Management
Maintain calendars tracking pitches, opportunities, interviews, submissions, and coverage. Balance multiple concurrent deadlines and proactively flag potential conflicts. Collaborate with communications and marketing teams to align messaging. Execute special projects and additional communications work as assigned. Maintain a repository of past submissions and award criteria for future reference.
Skills & experience we’re looking for:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong news judgment and the ability to translate technical information into compelling narratives. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with journalists, including pitching stories and following up. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; comfortable managing multiple deadlines and coordinating with various teams and contacts. Ability to operate effectively under time pressure, including in fast-moving or sensitive situations. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and design tools like Canva. Familiarity with media monitoring platforms and social listening tools is a plus. Prior experience managing award submission processes, coordinating media interviews for leaders, or working in a regulated industry is preferred but not required.
Education & background:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field (or equivalent work experience). 3+ years in media relations, public relations, journalism, or communications, ideally with hands-on experience pitching to journalists. Experience coordinating media interviews and briefings for executives or subject matter experts preferred.
What we offer:
Fully remote role — work from anywhere. Full training and onboarding provided. Supportive team environment with clear guidance and mentorship. Opportunity to develop expertise in media relations and communications strategy. Potential for growth and expanded responsibilities as you develop your skills.
