About this role
We’re looking for a creative storyteller to join our editorial team as a Feature Writer. This is an ideal role if you enjoy connecting with people, covering local events, conducting interviews, and producing engaging content that informs and inspires readers. You’ll identify and develop stories of community interest, conduct interviews, gather information and photographs, and create compelling content across multiple platforms.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll work across several key areas:
Content Creation
Identify and pursue local stories with broad community interest. Conduct interviews and gather information from sources. Write engaging feature articles and adapt content for digital platforms, websites, and social media. Take or obtain photographs to accompany your stories. Enter and manage articles within editorial systems, and make revisions as requested during the editing process.
Community Engagement
Respond to inquiries from readers and community members via phone and email. Coordinate interviews and obtain information from sources in a timely manner. Represent the organisation at community events, interviews, and public functions.
Collaboration
Work closely with editors, layout staff, and other departments to enhance content quality. Contribute ideas that improve editorial content, design, and workflow processes.
Position Details
Contract length: Part-time (up to 20 hours per week)
Work arrangement: Primarily work from home. You must be available to report in person for interviews, events, and assignments as needed. Schedule is flexible; hours vary based on interview assignments and publication needs.
Rate: Competitive entry-level pay, details shared upon application.
Location: Candidates must be available to attend in-person interviews, events, and assignments as needed.
Skills/background needed
You should have:
Exceptional writing, editing, and grammar skills. Ability to tell compelling stories and engage readers. Strong interviewing and communication abilities. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Excellent organisation, time management, and prioritisation skills. Strong attention to detail and sound judgment. Working knowledge of AP Style. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Comfort using digital tools, social media platforms, and content management systems.
Experience and education
A bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field is preferred. Minimum of two years of writing, editing, or related experience is preferred, though equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered. No prior professional experience is required – full training will be provided.
