Content Writer – Entry Level, Remote

Overview

Reporting to a senior team member, you’ll be responsible for identifying and producing compelling news and feature stories about people, research, and teaching across a large academic faculty. This role involves writing for diverse audiences including current members, prospective colleagues, media, donors, alumni, and the general public.

You’ll work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and colleagues across departments to produce feature stories, news articles, profiles, and original content that highlights research and teaching. You’ll coordinate directly with academic departments to stay informed of faculty work and achievements, conduct interviews and background research, and produce news stories for publication on websites and other platforms.

This role primarily involves planning, drafting, formatting, proofreading, and editing of news content. You’ll also manage online newsfeeds, identify opportunities to promote content across platforms and social media channels, and may edit work from student and freelance contributors. There will be opportunities to create content for video, podcasts, social media, and other communications tasks including speechwriting and correspondence as needed.

What you’ll do

• Write and edit news and feature stories, web content, and other materials for target audiences
• Conduct outreach to departments to identify and write stories about faculty work and accomplishments
• Identify and pitch stories that align with content strategy and priorities
• Update, create, and publish news content on department websites
• Research and suggest content ideas to support communication goals
• Support communication planning and help measure the impact of communication strategies
• Assist with preparing content for video, podcasts, social media, speeches, and presentations
• Coordinate with colleagues across the organisation to organize messaging and content distribution
• May supervise administrative staff or student contributors

Skills/background needed

• Superior written and oral communication skills with the ability to write clearly, concisely, and effectively for diverse audiences
• Strong editing and proofreading skills
• Knowledge of digital content production and best practices
• Experience proofreading news and feature articles for general audiences
• Knowledge of interview and research best practices
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups
• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Proven ability to meet deadlines and work both collaboratively and independently
• Experience updating website content using a content management system
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and research using online databases and web resources
• Ability to handle complex situations with good judgment and maintain confidentiality
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of related experience

Preferred experience

• 1.5+ years of journalism experience
• Experience writing in a nonprofit or higher education setting
• Familiarity with trends and practices in higher education

Work format

Hybrid position with flexibility to work from home part-time while collaborating on-site as needed.
