Position Overview:
As an Emergency Communications Dispatcher, you’ll be the first point of contact for emergency and non-emergency calls. You’ll answer calls, document information, dispatch appropriate emergency personnel, track response units, maintain communication with field teams, and ensure accurate records are kept. This is a fast-paced role where clear communication and quick thinking are essential.
What You’ll Do:
• Answer, process, and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and other agencies
• Obtain caller information and provide pre-arrival and post-arrival instructions for medical, fire, and police emergencies
• Dispatch appropriate emergency personnel and track the location and status of response units
• Maintain clear communication with field personnel, relaying incident locations, directions, and caller updates
• Access databases and computer systems to process and retrieve information accurately
• Coordinate with city personnel and outside agencies during emergencies, including mutual aid to neighbouring emergency services
• Operate dispatch software, phone systems, and radio communication equipment
• Assist with routine equipment maintenance and testing of computers, radios, and communications devices
• Remain calm and focused under pressure, handling multiple tasks and switching between priorities efficiently
Skills and Background Needed:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• At least 18 years old
• Experience in customer service, call centres, or fast-paced work environments is helpful but not required
• Strong typing skills and comfort with computer systems
• Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful situations
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Willingness to learn and adapt quickly to new systems and procedures
Training and Certifications:
Full training will be provided. You will be required to obtain the following certifications within your first year of employment, with support from the onboarding programme:
• Public Safety Telecommunications Certification
• Emergency dispatch database certifications
• CPR Certification
• Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification
Other Requirements:
• Valid driver’s licence
• U.S. citizen or eligible to work
