Are you passionate about telling stories that matter to your community? We’re seeking an entry-level reporter to join our newsroom and cover education and community news.
You’ll be the reporter people turn to when something happens at their local schools. You’ll cover school boards, classrooms, teachers, students and extracurricular activities, but you’ll also dig deeper to find the issues, people and trends that deserve attention. We’re looking for someone who doesn’t just wait for a press release – someone who goes looking for the story.
What You’ll Do
• Own our education beat and build relationships with school officials, teachers, students, parents and community leaders• Cover school board meetings and other education-related events• Find original stories that go beyond meeting agendas and announcements• Tell compelling stories about the people who make our schools and community unique• Cover breaking news and other local events as they happen• Jump into coverage of local government, public safety, community events, features and whatever the day brings• Take photos and video when the story calls for it• Bring story ideas to the newsroom and chase the ones that matter• Use social media and digital platforms to reach readers
Who We’re Looking For
Whether you’re a recent journalism graduate looking for your first newsroom role, someone with a couple of years of reporting experience ready to own a beat, or already covering a community and wanting to do more – we want to hear from you.
You should be:
• A strong writer who knows how to tell a story• Curious and willing to keep asking questions• Comfortable talking to anyone – from officials to students• Willing to knock on doors, make phone calls and chase down answers• Comfortable working on deadline• Interested in becoming part of the community you cover• Passionate about local journalism and the difference good reporting can make
Why This Role?
Local journalism matters. The stories you write will be read by parents, teachers, coaches and community members who care about what’s happening in their hometown. You’ll have the opportunity to build a beat, develop sources, find your own stories and establish yourself as a journalist. While education will be your primary focus, you’ll also have the chance to cover a variety of community news. No two days are the same.
The Role
Rate: Competitive entry-level pay, details shared upon application.
Contract length: Full-time, ongoing
Hours: 40 hours per week
Work location: On-site
