We’re looking for an experienced writer and communications strategist to lead executive communications and institutional storytelling in a one-year appointment role with potential for extension.
You’ll work closely with senior leadership, the advancement team, and marketing colleagues to develop clear, compelling communications that articulate organizational direction, priorities, and impact to internal and external audiences. This is a collaborative, hands-on role perfect for an exceptional writer who can translate complex topics into engaging messages.
Key Responsibilities:
• Write, edit, and shape speeches, presentations, correspondence, statements, and other executive materials that capture leadership’s voice while advancing organizational priorities
• Translate complex institutional, financial, and strategic matters into clear, accessible communications for different audiences
• Lead communications supporting major institutional changes, helping leadership explain what’s changing, why it matters, and how it advances the mission
• Manage media inquiries and coordinate institutional responses; prepare senior leaders for media engagements and interviews
• Develop messaging frameworks for complex or evolving issues, anticipating stakeholder questions and adapting quickly as circumstances change
• Partner with advancement and marketing colleagues to strengthen the quality and consistency of institutional content and storytelling
• Provide senior-level editorial review and strategic communications counsel to leadership on positioning, reputation, and major messaging priorities
• Monitor emerging issues that may affect the organization’s reputation and lead rapid-response communications when needed
Skills/background needed:
• Bachelor’s degree and 10+ years of professional experience in executive communications, strategic communications, journalism, public relations, higher education, or related field
• Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with strong editorial judgment
• Demonstrated experience developing communications for organizational change, institutional transformation, reputation management, and high-stakes environments
• Proven ability to communicate complex, rapidly evolving issues clearly and effectively to multiple audiences
• Experience working directly with senior executives, providing candid and strategic communications counsel
• Experience managing media inquiries and preparing senior leaders for interviews and external engagements
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, shifting circumstances, and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• High degree of discretion and professionalism when handling confidential or sensitive matters
• Strong understanding of higher education or similarly complex organizational structures and communications dynamics
• Ability to work collaboratively across different departments and functions while maintaining a consistent organizational voice
