About this role:
We’re looking for a Community Journalist to report on local events, meetings, and stories that matter to your community. This is a writing and reporting role where you’ll attend community events, interview participants, take photos, and write clear, engaging articles that help readers understand what happened and why it matters.
This is not a professional photography or videography position—strong writing comes first.
What you’ll do:
• Attend assigned community events, meetings, and activities in your local area
• Take accurate notes and identify the most important information
• Interview event organizers, officials, business owners, and community members when appropriate
• Write clear, factual, and engaging articles about what happened and why it matters
• Capture quality photographs using a camera or smartphone
• Verify names, titles, dates, quotes, and facts before submitting your work
• Provide photo captions and descriptions
• Meet publication deadlines, typically within 24 hours
• Communicate with the editorial team before and after assignments
• Pitch interesting local stories when you find them
What we’re looking for:
Strong writing ability matters more than journalism experience or a formal degree. We want someone who is curious, observant, and comfortable walking into an unfamiliar event to figure out what’s important and who to talk to.
Ideal candidates have:
• Strong writing and communication skills
• Attention to factual accuracy and detail
• Natural curiosity and good judgment about what matters
• Ability to interview people professionally and respectfully
• Comfort working independently and meeting deadlines
• Basic photography skills (smartphone camera is fine)
• Reliable transportation in your local area
• Flexibility for occasional evening and weekend assignments
Experience with journalism, interview techniques, local government, photography, or community reporting is helpful but not required. Full training and guidance will be provided.
Types of stories you might cover:
Community and neighborhood meetings, local government and civic affairs, business openings, arts and cultural events, education programs, local sports, nonprofit initiatives, festivals, and profiles of interesting community members.
Rate: Competitive entry-level pay, details shared upon application.
Contract length: Part Time / Freelance
Work style: Mix of field reporting (attending events in person in your local area) and remote writing (writing and submitting from home).
