About This Role
You’ll cover the stories, people, and issues that matter most in your community. As a Reporter, you’ll report on breaking news, attend meetings and events, build local sources, and develop stories that add depth and accountability.
This is a hands-on role for someone who is naturally curious, comfortable working in a fast-moving environment, and excited to be deeply connected to the community they cover. In smaller markets, local journalism is personal—it’s about helping a community stay informed, feel connected, and understand the people and issues shaping daily life. Your work can make a real difference here.
What You’ll Do
Cover the community with urgency and purpose by reporting on breaking news, local developments, and key community issues. You’ll attend meetings, events, and public forums to stay close to the story, and write quickly and clearly across digital and print platforms while balancing daily production with longer-term reporting.
Develop strong, meaningful local coverage by building a broad, diverse network of reliable sources and consistently developing new relationships beyond official spokespeople and press releases. Generate original story ideas and pursue reporting beyond official sources, and produce stories that go beyond the daily headline.
Help strengthen the local news report by collaborating with editors, photographers, and other newsroom teammates. Contribute story ideas and bring energy to daily coverage planning. Use digital tools and social media platforms to better reach readers, and develop a strong instinct for stories that will resonate on digital platforms.
Skills/Background Needed
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field required. Newsroom reporting experience with strong news writing skills and familiarity with journalistic writing standards. Strong reporting, interviewing, and newsgathering skills with sound news judgment and the ability to work effectively under deadline.
You bring curiosity, initiative, and a genuine interest in local communities. You’re comfortable with digital storytelling and audience-focused journalism. You’re willing to spend significant time outside the newsroom building relationships, attending community events, and finding stories where people actually live and work. You ask good questions, build trust, and understand that local stories can have lasting impact.
Rate: Competitive entry-level pay, details shared upon application.
Contract Length: Full-time, permanent position
Location: Local position available in a smaller market community.
