Content Writer – Higher Education (Remote, Entry Level)

About the role:

We’re looking for a talented writer to join our communications team. You’ll develop high-quality editorial content that showcases teaching, research, and community engagement work. Reporting to the communications leadership team, you’ll work across the organisation to report, write, edit, and produce compelling content for news publications, websites, newsletters, digital magazines, donor communications, and other channels.

Your primary focus will be on teaching and research stories, including student experiences, faculty expertise, research initiatives, and other content that demonstrates academic and research impact. You’ll also provide significant support for donor and alumni communications, including storytelling, newsletters, fundraising activities, and magazine features.

Working from editorial priorities set by your manager, you’ll collaborate with faculty, students, alumni, donors, subject-matter experts, and other communicators to identify sources, conduct interviews, develop stories, and ensure content is accurate, engaging, and audience-focused. You’ll also provide editing and production support across the team, maintaining consistent standards for accuracy, clarity, style, brand alignment, and publication readiness.

What you’ll bring:

You have a strong foundation in writing and communications, whether through formal education (such as a degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or marketing) or equivalent relevant work experience. You demonstrate:

• Professional experience in communications, journalism, writing, editing, public relations, or a related field
• Demonstrated ability to research, write, and produce high-quality public-facing content
• Skill at translating scientific, technical, or complex information into clear, engaging content for general audiences
• Strong interviewing, reporting, writing, editing, proofreading, and fact-checking abilities
• Experience writing for multiple audiences, formats, and communication channels
• Ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
• Experience collaborating with editors, communicators, experts, and other partners
• Ability to receive feedback and revise work effectively
• Working knowledge of AP style or comparable professional editorial standards

Nice to have:

• Experience writing or editing in higher education, science, research, or related environments
• Experience writing about scientific or technical subjects for general audiences
• Experience developing alumni, donor, or fundraising communications
• Experience writing or editing magazine, newsletter, or long-form feature content
• Familiarity with content management systems, email publication platforms, or digital publishing tools
